The Importance of Diagnosing an Ankle Sprain

The bones in the ankle are connected by a variety of ligaments. Ankle sprains occur when these ligaments become either overstretched or torn, usually because the ankle is twisted. Mild ankle sprains mean that the ankle is tender and swollen, but more severe ankle sprains can make the ankle unstable and unable to support any weight. Patients who believe they may have sprained an ankle would be wise to consult with a podiatrist, because the symptoms of an ankle sprain are similar to those of a broken ankle, and an x-ray may be necessary. How Does an Ankle Sprain Occur?

Ankle sprains take place when the ligaments in your ankle are torn or stretched beyond their limits. There are multiple ways that the ankle can become injured, including twisting or rolling over onto your ankle, putting undue stress on it, or causing trauma to the ankle itself.

When to See the Podiatrist for a Broken Toe

If you have injured your toe and notice that it is red, bruised, swollen, painful, or difficult to walk on, you may have broken your toe. A mild toe fracture may respond to conservative treatments, such as resting and icing the foot, taking pain medication, wearing comfortable shoes or orthotics, and taping the broken toe to the healthy toe next to it. A more severe fracture, however, will require more serious medical intervention. If you have injured your toe and have pain or swelling that lingers after two or three days, have difficulty walking up to six weeks after the initial injury, or if you have diabetes, it is suggested that you seek the care of a podiatrist. If you have an open fracture, with the broken bone poking through your skin, please seek medical attention immediately to prevent permanent damage and infections. What Is a Broken Toe?

Foot Stretches for Walking Pain

Walking can be a great exercise, but sometimes it can be difficult to complete when it leaves your feet sore and aching. Fortunately, walking-related foot pain can be reduced by stretching your feet. Sit in a chair with your right foot resting on the opposite knee. Interlace the fingers of your left hand with your toes and squeeze them together for 10 seconds, repeating three times on each foot. Relieve tension along the sole of your foot by rolling a tennis ball underneath each foot for one to three minutes. There are several different stretches that can help alleviate pain in various places on the foot. Stretching the Feet

Stretching the muscles in the foot is an important part in any physical activity. Feet that are tight can lead to less flexibility and make you more prone to injury. One of the most common forms of foot pain, plantar fasciitis, can be stretched out to help ease the pain. Stretching can not only ease pain from plantar fasciitis but also prevent it as well. However, it is important to see a podiatrist first to determine if stretching is right for you. Podiatrists can also recommend other ways to stretch your feet. Once you know whether stretching is right for you, here are some excellent stretches you can do.

  • Using a foam roller or any cylindrical object (a water bottle or soda can will do), roll the object under your foot back and forth. You should also exert pressure on the object. Be sure to do this to both feet for a minute. Do this exercise three times each.
  • Similar to the previous exercise, take a ball, such as a tennis ball, and roll it under your foot while seated and exert pressure on it.
  • Grab a resistance band or towel and take a seat. If you are using a towel, fold it length wise. Next put either one between the ball of your foot and heel and pull with both hands on each side towards you. Hold this for 15 seconds and then switch feet. Do this three times for each foot.
  • Finally hold your big toe while crossing one leg over the other. Pull the toe towards you and hold for 15 seconds. Once again do this three times per foot.

It is best to go easy when first stretching your foot and work your way up. If your foot starts hurting, stop exercising to ice and rest the foot. It is advised that you then see a podiatrist for help.

If your feet always seem to be cold, especially at bedtime, you may be suffering from poor circulation in your lower extremities. When fatty deposits (plaques) build up within arteries (atherosclerosis), this can cause them to narrow and thereby reduce the blood supply. This condition, known as peripheral arterial disease (PAD), can make your feet feel cold and cause pain in your calves. It can also make your feet look blue or purplish when sitting and white or pale when lying down. Cold feet can also occur in people who do not have enough body fat, which helps insulate the body. Small blood vessels then try to conserve heat by constricting, which causes toes and other parts of the body to feel cold or numb and turn blue followed by white. This is known as Raynaud's phenomenon. If your feet feel cold or numb, it is suggested that you make an appointment with a podiatrist as soon as possible to assess the situation.

Poor Circulation in the Feet

Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs is can be caused by peripheral artery disease (PAD), which is the result of a buildup of plaque in the arteries.

Plaque buildup or atherosclerosis results from excess calcium and cholesterol in the bloodstream. This can restrict the amount of blood which can flow through the arteries. Poor blood circulation in the feet and legs are sometimes caused by inflammation in the blood vessels, known as vasculitis.

Causes

Lack of oxygen and oxygen from poor blood circulation restricts muscle growth and development. It can also cause:

  • Muscle pain, stiffness, or weakness   
  • Numbness or cramping in the legs 
  • Skin discoloration
  • Slower nail & hair growth
  • Erectile dysfunction

Those who have diabetes or smoke are at greatest risk for poor circulation, as are those who are over 50. If you have poor circulation in the feet and legs it may be caused by PAD and is important to make changes to your lifestyle in order to reduce risk of getting a heart attack or stroke. Exercise and maintaining a healthy lifestyle will dramatically improve conditions.
